ARE YOU MARKETING YOURSELF OR YOUR ACT PROPERLY?

Showcall Showcase at Thoresby Hall from Nov 5-8 provided an opportunity to emphasise the importance of effective marketing for performers looking for work in the light entertainment sector with an award for the best promotional material displayed at the event. Artistes traditionally bring large amounts of photos, flyers, posters etc, many of which do them very little credit, nor promote them to best advantage.

This year, a sample of each was scrutinised by a panel chaired by Peter Allen of Bourne Leisure and gold and silver winners were decided. The panel was asked to take into consideration:

Quality: Photo reproduction, paper stock etc

Design: Does it complement the image of the performer(s)? Is it eye catching? Readable? Is there an effective and selective use of typefaces, or a determination to cram in as many as possible?

Size: Will leaflets, posters etc fit in a handbag or brief case? Or are they so small, they'll be lost? (eg, business cards are a waste of time unless personally handed out)

Photos: Up to date or years out of date? Do they represent you or your act as it is now? Can they be reproduced by and in other media?

Information: Too much? Too little? Bookers need to know what you do, what you look like and how they can get hold of you; they might also listen to a cd or watch a dvd. They don't want a folder full of information on your favourite colours, the first cd you bought and where you like to go on holiday

The winning material is displayed below and prizes will be on their way to Zac Bauman and Carl Taylor shortly

Gold Award

Zac Bauman - Trevor George Ents

'Creative, and very different: Bauman made additional use of the design to label promotional bottles of Jack Daniels'

Silver Award

Un Divo (Carl Taylor) - Was/Is Management

'Classy design, good information, opened out into a nice poster'

The judging panel was also impressed by Georgia Holland's (Casa Management) A4 flyer - 'contemporary design, eye-catching, and with loads of information'; however, it lacked any contact details which spoiled its chances of an award:

The Stage's MD, Catherine Comerford, and Head of Production and Design, Trevor Davies, selected four further examples of promotional material - from Ian Jones, Niqi Brown, Robert T Leonard, and Andrew James - which they considered particularly well designed and worthy of commendation; see their flyers below:

Congratulations to those listed here who have given such thought to marketing - hopefully, they will encourage all artistes to promote themselves to the same standard.
